Walking in the City

The pain most easily forgot
is an invented problem of the city
for elsewhere without a thought
release without shame or pity

is as certain as the safety of squirrels
where speed and indecision are
the end of the road in a place where
paths are only metaphors

for the places that things tend
to go on their way to where
they already are, going and then
going wherever they stand.
