Bartleby Died for All of Us

While there are few scriveners left,
It's clear that a refusal
Marks the beginning of adulthood
The mature human response
To tragically irreconcilable irony
Directed by hypocritical hands

Following a No,
There are other ways to go
Beyond expiration
Even if that was the starting point
We needed to hear

Walk, walk into the blue day
Loosen the grip on whatever is tightest
Take another direction, rather than
Making your refusal the total of your being

And all that is possible
Only with the extreme example
Thank you, Bartleby,
For showing us the way we are
And suggesting that there might be more
Than working away from everything that could be
