To Hope For vs. To Hope

Hope has been sullied with the stink of expectation
Thesaurus crimes have erased
Etymological complexity and specificity potency

We solve this terrible mystery
With a prepositional method
For when hope is for something
It debases itself
Rides back into the dark forest
Of pride and animosity and avarice

While hope that ends a sentence
Hope that stands on its own
Hope which is neither instrument nor utility
Can power quiet streams of icy light
Warming frozen lakes
To quench existence thirsts

To hope is to sense possibility
Not the possibility of
But its general grandparent
A sense of universal transformation
Without a prayer for specific salvation
