Cycle Season

Am I counting again?
Minutes, poems, miles,

hand me a better color for the
horse whose metal back

carries me, or do I,
pushing down and again,

or lifting up and before,
nail, hammer, a leap from a fish,

well fed now, back to the shadows,
where I can see the echoes of cold
on summer's unkempt cheek.
