you can't think it away
or wish it weren't there
this presence, while unfair
holds one in its sway

bookends demand
the texts in between
revenge giving damn
a scapegoat of means

but systems there are
where jealously guarding
is irrelevant, barred
none envy regarding

for chance you accept
the risk of it, all
a part of this kept
inside of our fall

given to take
is taken to mean
escape from this lake
