Persons of Fire, Pieces of Dirt

Beneath the person,
persons. Lurking in the sparks,
metals give the flinty
a minty wind, a glint
of winter in the water
of fire. More people
develop tree sense
and become fungus,
in the grayest mushroom
sense. Normalcy ain't just
Harding anymore. It's harder
to picture in a shattered glass
brunch pile; a waffle made of
waffling people cannot square
the mindful circle. Awareness
was not enough before, and it
is especially not enough now.
The wind-up word springs
eternal, sure, but the seasons
of group life have a permanent
darkness that comes after the frozen
winter shatters the furtive fire. Sure,
repetition lives on, but it may be only
rock and light and matterlessness.
Tell me a story. I will listen. At least
until my least common decimator
undoes the fragments and their cruel
numbers. After your narration finishes,
let's dig a hole, for no reason, for no use,
for no common or individual purpose.
Let's be repetitious as we move dirt,
let's become persons. Let's do the brown
together, knowing that our silt will
retain silken memory well after
well after.

The poetic method applied in this poem is a combination of free association and deliberate bucket-dipping into the stream of consciousness. My surroundings, my immediate mind-state, and my immediate body-state conspired to extrude this spontaneous poem. I am committed to the development of this spontaneous process of improvisational poetics as a higher-order-than-single-poem artistic method. I have been recently moved to introduce the process as a preamble to my more surrealist poems, though in this case the preamble is an endnote. Please try to put yourself in a frame of mind to absorb multiple layers of apparently intended and apparently unintended meaning as you read or re-read this poem. Try to imagine your imagination as a sponge and a cloud and a star, absorbing, raining, and shining light and water and fire, and then read. The rhymes and repetitions are little jump-cut accelerations for both writer and reader, to dwell in the dancing continuity that language offers to the absorbing, to the attentive.
