Why I love poems

When it comes to food
I prefer a large meal.
When it comes to novels
I like Tolstoy.
When it comes to art
I like to make sketches
in words
digging a little
in the forest behind the house
long enough to find a little clay
to form into a little figurine
whose little face might tell
the story of a sad hour
to a little reader's minute.
Sixty seconds to wisdom,
a whole minute longer
than instant enlightenment
which I believe in.
The universe's grain of sand
demands no great effort to lift
and a trillion lifetimes
to sift.
One word might be a poem
but a poem is a poem
and in a little poem
home
and the music
of a thousand tree flowers
or a burst of fertile light
from a single point
between horizons.
