Poetry elevates the serious
into a serious expression.
What is an unserious poet
to do? I do not mean an
insincere poet, a true
contradiction, I mean
a poet who does not
wish to take seriously
any or all of the serious
things. I take seriously
the sincere journey to
demolish the serious,
to deconstruct the
valuable, to turn gold
back into lead. Poetry's
alchemy, it turns out,
works in reverse. Poems
can revere anything, and
they can even learn to
revere nothing.
