A Poet Forgets

If I want to remember something
I had better not write a poem about it.
Poetry is digestive forgetting,
a metabolization of vitamins and generals
in which waste and muscle and thoughts
become and unbecome
in proportion to days swept
and nights wept.
The body may expand
sometimes
may grow
sometimes
but like language
there is a size and a stasis
briefly realized
on the road to expurgation
of every object part.
