What does a writer do?

First question: is it a job?
Does it pay, like crime, 
by what it takes away?

Next consider the reader,
the true end of story;
are nutrition facts
as relevant as ingredients,
ordered in amounting order?

The writer writes. Writing
makes words, letter by letter --
sentences, word by word --
pieces, page by page -- 
shelves, book by book.

That's it. The questions
how many shelves,
how many turns,
how many eyes,
these are questions to
address to business.

The writer's busyness
must only address 
pens or keys
and hands.
