Explain it to me

Tell me,
why can't we have a society
in which individuals
pay a little attention
and a few dollars
to help the people
who have names
and hearts.

Who sleep 
and eat
breathing nearby
or far away;
it has been recommended
by most every prophet
while it's decried
in nearly every pamphlet
(and by that I mean
website).

Perhaps we can
think it over
and you can help me understand
why you don't want to help.
