The Tyranny of Names

when sugar turns to caramel, it's a delicate task
as with names, too long under fire and it goes
to ash. identification, show me your capers,
recorded in memory, rewinding, tapers:
singular things, universal, as with numbers
but laden with the judges' proclamations,
thumbprints. legal escape affords only paper
tails; vestigial letters, binding, nails.
else a cave to hide in, a joystick for
drones: striking at others, proxies
for thrones. narrower pythons are
temporary phenomena, when opened
a bit wider, capybara, metabolisms.
a thing with a name has pretensions to
story; a ring and a game with tools, glory.
fiddling basements or decks on the roof,
two eyes see a city, the named sees proof.
