You Bet Your Life?

The brashest gamblers
Go all-in
When they only have one to spend
Ever

How could one fathom
Betting the world's only farm
When there are villages to feed
And goats to be milked

Boggles my mind
When I hear of these gamers
Tossing all variety to the wind
And saying this is me
Until the end of my times
I'm committed come health or sin

It's clearly the way
To fame and great riches
Picking that single number
On the identity roulette wheel
And betting until your chips are gone
And the house won't give you any more

When I see the excellent
And their commitment
I can only blanche
For to go all the way
To Prez
Or to the best press
Or to the scientific cutting edge
It takes a gamble
That only pays or collects
When your days are direly numbered

Sure there are ways
To make a quick rise
Cotton candy greatness for fifteen minutes
And maybe that spark
Will light up the park
And Wikipedia remember your name

But even if you win
Those online encyclo-sections
Your achievement is Pyrrhic
As so many doors do then close

Many of your chances will Google you down
Pinning your tie with its clip
When they see your deeds
Or words
Or screeds
And consider you out of the mix

For those of us who can't stand
The idea of tying any possible hand
Up in the knots of the past
Head up but not too high
Strolling not strutting
Finding new ways
To put a few more chips
On every number on the wheel
And spin wherever it may
You'll have each a good day
Life's value never at stake
